My mother’s house is about 30 feet away from a rental house that has a serious cockroach problem, and as a result most of the houses in the immediate area, my mother’s included, have a problem now too. We initially tried traps and bombs and these aren’t cutting it. I was glad to come upon this site and find products that will probably take care of things, but until the landlord of that neighboring house evicts the tenants and gets the roaches eradicated (he has Terminix going in there regularly even now), my mother’s house will be vulnerable to more infestation. We will be getting some of your baits to get things started inside, but which one of your sprays would be recommended as a barrier to be put down outside the house? Thanks for such an informative site!

Definitely the CYPERMETHRIN. This active is both fast working and repellent by nature. Spray it on the building and in the turf. If you cover the entire area between the two houses, you’ll stop any from migrating to your mothers house. ‘

I also suggest you apply some COMPLETE GRANULES to the turf first, prior to spraying, as they will help provide longer protection and overall better results. They’ll also take care of any that may be nesting in the turf which cockroaches will commonly do.

As you now know, German cockroach infestations can get large and when left uncared for, will spread from house to house throughout the neighborhood. Be sure to treat the inside with some ROACH GEL so you’ve got the inside protected. And be sure to spray the yard again if you find out the tenants are about to be evicted. Many times the act of tenants leaving can cause a large exodus of roaches from the infested house seeking a new location and during this time, they’ll leave the rental house in droves. It’s then that you’ll want to refresh your granules and Cypermethrin to make sure you’ve got the area well treated.

Here are direct links to the information and products listed above:

I need to know how to control cockroaches in my tv room. I don’t know where they came from but right now they seem to be located on the sofa and end table. Should i spray or bait for them?

Cockroach control can be done by both baiting and spraying. There really isn’t one that’s better than the other but there is usually a better choice based on the local infestation. First, I suggest you review our online COCKROACH CONTROL ARTICLE which does a good job of summarizing all the cockroach products we now have available. The sprays like ORTHENE WP and PT-280 ORTHENE are excellent options and strong enough to contend with any local cockroach problem. If there has been a lot of food on or around the end table and sofa, the sprays may be one of your best options. You’ll probably need to get the bottom side of this furniture pretty well if you want good control but in the end, the effort will reward you with quick results.

Baiting with the COCKROACH GEL is another choice that can work too. The only limitation to baiting is that it tends to take longer and if there is a lot of local food readily available, the cockroaches won’t feed in earnest. This could make getting control of the cockroach problem a bit more tedious and harder to obtain. In summary, if you want to bait, you’ll need to do a lot of cleaning up to insure there isn’t a supply of food scraps around the area or else they will assuredly feed on the other food over the bait.

Most all roaches have wings and many can fly. Furthermore, there are several species that live outside. The Pennsylvania Wood Roach is quite common as is the Asian Cockroach. Most of these are active at night and attracted to lights. If left to forage on your home, they’ll end up nesting and ultimately inside. If you’ve already got activity, you should consider two treatments.

Most of these are active at night and attracted to lights. If left to forage on your home, they’ll end up nesting and ultimately inside. If you’ve already got activity, you should consider two treatments.

First, spray the outside of the structure with some ORTHENE WP which is discussed in our COCKROACH CONTROL ARTICLE. It will kill off any foraging on the home. If you’ve got siding and suspect they could be living up under it, dust with DRIONE to get rid of them quickly.

Second, if you see any inside, set out some COCKROACH TRAPS along with MAXFORCE GEL for quick control in living areas.

I‘ve got a bad roach problem in my kitchen and want to treat. What’s the best poison for these roaches? I don’t want to spray in my cabinets but will if you think it would be best. Right now they seem to be concentrated in our oven and sink area.

First, take a little time to review our on line article on COCKROACH CONTROL. In this article you’ll learn about two baits we highly recommend for use in sensitive areas like kitchens. A combination of MAXFORCE GEL and PT AVERT will definitely take care of them in your kitchen. These two baits are very safe to use and can be applied inside cabinets and other areas where german roaches like to live.

Second, consider setting out some COCKROACH TRAPS throughout the rest of the home to monitor the situation. If you note one room as having more of a problem than another area, either bait it or spray with some PT ORTHENE or ORTHENE WP. Once you get the main nest locations you should be able to keep this pest under control and I’m sure the bait will prove to be your best option but spraying the “other” areas of the house is suggested to make sure they don’t relocate.

I think I have cockroaches but I’m not sure what to look for.
There are many signs of cockroaches when they are active in an area. Typically these signs can be seen in the form of dirt like specs that will accumulate in corners where they are hiding or living. The dirt is usually a dark brown, almost black, and very small, like the size of a poppy seed or smaller. Usually there will be a lot of these signs around in the corners of the cabinet up high or behind the door in the hinges. Set out one of our Roach Traps as seen in our Cockroach Control Article and it will catch any that are active which will let you know for sure if you can’t find enough signs to confirm you do indeed have a problem. I would say this would be best before you start treating without knowing just what is leaving this mess around.
